Rap music isn’t profitable; Sarkodie has taken all the money—YPee

Ghanaian hip hop artist and performer, YPee, whose real name is Andy Agyemang, has revealed that rap music is no longer profitable.

YPee stated that rap doesn’t generate the income it once did, which has led many rappers to focus on releasing singles rather than full albums. He noted that the golden era of rap music is over, citing Sarkodie, Ghana’s top rapper, as an example. Sarkodie’s biggest hits, such as “Adonai” and “You Go Kill Me,” are not rap tracks but more commercial and danceable tunes that performed well in the market.

Cheddar’s 12-Point Plan: Transforming Ghana’s Creative Industries in Film, Fashion, and Music

Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar, has a twelve-point plan that talks about how to grow the creative economy, which includes music, movies, fashion, and art. During his virtual event on September 1, 2024, Cheddar, the leader of the New Force political party, shared that one of his important goals is to support arts and culture.

He said it is important to build a world-class movie studio in Ghana, similar to Hollywood or Tyler Perry’s studios. This will bring more people from countries like South Africa, Nigeria, England, and the U.S. to Ghana to make movies, which will help boost tourism.

Cheddar also talked about the need to protect the work of content creators, such as bloggers, YouTubers, musicians, filmmakers, and artists. He said it’s important to make sure they get paid fairly for their work, and that their creations are protected from being stolen or sold cheaply.

He also said the government’s National Security and Communication departments should work together to stop piracy, which is when people illegally use or sell someone else’s work. Cheddar believes this will help musicians and other artists earn more money and allow them to work with big companies like Sony and Universal to distribute their work worldwide.
