Daddy Lumba, Ghana’s Music Legend, Dies at 60

Ghana and the world of African music are mourning the loss of a true icon. Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, known to generations of fans as Daddy Lumba, passed away peacefully on Saturday, 26th July 2025, at the age of 60.

Widely considered Ghana’s greatest musician of all time, Daddy Lumba leaves behind a legacy that spans more than four decades. With 34 albums under his belt and countless hits, he shaped the sound of modern Ghanaian highlife, blending tradition with innovation in a way few artists

Born on 29th September 1964, Daddy Lumba burst onto the music scene in the late 1980s with his signature style—a mix of soulful melodies, highlife rhythms, and heartfelt lyrics. He captured the emotions of Ghanaians with songs about love, heartbreak, faith, and resilience.

From early classics like Yereye Aka Akwantuo Mu to timeless anthems such as Aben Wo Ha and Theresa, his voice became the soundtrack of many lives across generations. His bold lyrics, charismatic persona, and unmatched consistency earned him admiration and sometimes controversy, but never irrelevance.

In 2024, Daddy Lumba received the Grand Medal, one of Ghana’s highest national honors, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the arts and culture. The award cemented his place not only in Ghana’s musical history but also in its national consciousness.

Earlier this year, his timeless love song “Mpempem Do Me” was featured on the official playlist of King Charles III, a rare international nod that showcased the global reach of Lumba’s music.

Beyond his vast discography, Daddy Lumba was a mentor, a trendsetter, and a cultural icon. He inspired countless musicians and fans, paving the way for modern Ghanaian highlife and Afrobeat stars. His music was both a reflection of society and a powerful influence on it.

As fans pour out tributes across social media and music channels, plans are already underway for a state-assisted funeral to honor his towering contribution to Ghanaian culture.

Daddy Lumba is survived by his children and family, who have requested privacy in this difficult time. The family is expected to release details about his final rites in the coming days.

Though Daddy Lumba’s voice may be silenced, his music will never fade. It will echo in the hearts of millions who danced, cried, and lived to the rhythm of his songs.
