Ghanaian actress, Nikki Samonas, has criticized the relevant authorities for what she called “putting Ghanaians on a rollercoaster trip” when the cedi appreciated, weeks after it depreciated.
Nikki’s remarks are in response to an unheard-of surprise in which the US dollar roughly pounded the Ghana cedi, causing it to trade as high as GH15 to US$1 a few weeks ago.
However, as of December 19, 2022, the local currency has fought back and is now trading for GH8.
Nikki Samonas reacted to this development by adding her name to the group of people who have been visibly distressed by the sharp increase in the cedi’s value relative to the dollar.
Nikki acknowledged that it had been a difficult time for her and said that it had impacted her professional dealings.
The well-known actress lamented the inconsistent performance of the local currency in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb’s Elsie Lamar, saying that the people in charge of its regulation are subjecting Ghanaians to a roller coaster.
“I want them to stop what they are doing. It’s like they are taking us on a rollercoaster ride. One moment it’s hey and the next moment it’s hmm. We don’t know what is going on. We want to be in control of what is going on. Even if we are not, at least we should be pre-informed, like the way they gave us the 2023 national budget. The dollar is important to us; it’s painful. We’re all affected,” she said.
Numerous Ghanaian celebrities, like Kwame A Plus, Lydia Forson, Prince David Osei, and others, have expressed their happiness with the strengthening of the cedi on social media.
