New Abirem Local GNAT Conference Elects New Leaders and Calls for Teacher Support
On Monday March 24, 2025, teachers from New Abirem local gathered at Emmanuel Presby Church for an important event—the GNAT Local Conference. This meeting brought together teachers, leaders, and education officials to discuss ways to improve education and support teachers. The event also included elections for new GNAT leaders.
A Call to Support Teachers
The conference began with a warm welcome from Mr. Richard Kankam Yeboah, the outgoing chairman. He thanked everyone for their hard work and encouraged them to work together to make a difference in education.
The Guest Speaker, Dominic Adu Bosompem, spoke on the theme: Learning for Sustainable Futures: Attracting and Retaining Teachers for Quality Education and Union Participation.” He explained that teachers play a very important role in shaping the future. However, if teachers are not well-paid, supported, and given good working conditions, they may leave the profession, which will affect the quality of education.
He also encouraged teachers to participate in GNAT (Ghana National Association of Teachers) to help fight for better salaries, good policies, and fair treatment. A strong teachers’ union, he said, is necessary for improving education in Ghana.
Mr. Solomon Azubila, the Municipal Director of Education, also spoke at the event. He agreed that teachers deserve better and called for teamwork between teachers, the government, and other stakeholders to improve education.
Election of New GNAT Leaders
After the discussions, the conference moved to the election of new leaders. Mr. Raymond Adu Nyantakyi, the Chairperson of the GNAT Election Committee, led the process. He first dissolved the old leadership before introducing the candidates, who shared their ideas and plans.
The elections went smoothly, and the following people were elected as new GNAT leaders:
