E/R: One Dead Following Conflict Between Two Communities in Ofoase Ayirebi
Following violent battles between Ofoase Zongo and Brenase youth, an armed police and military squad has been dispatched to Brenase in the Ofoase Ayirebi constituency of the Eastern Region.
Four people have been shot, with one person now officially deceased, according to the police.
Superintendent George Bawah, the commander of the Akyemansa District Police, told Starr News that “the situation is under control.”
According to information obtained by Starr News, a group of Zongo youth from Ofoase attacked a Brenase kid who was thought to have previously battered a Zongo community member and damaged his motorcycle.
The victim’s father and another person who went to the neighborhood after hearing about the incident were both attacked and turned over to the police.
In an effort to revenge, the Brenase youth mobilized on motorbikes and invaded Ofoase Zongo while gunfire erupted, but police intervened.
The Zongo youth of Ofoase, however, mobilized on Wednesday, July 27,2022, in trucks and cars with weapons in an attempt to assault the Brenase community, but the Brenase Youth, upon hearing the news, also mobilized and armed themselves on the streets in waiting.
According to reports, some Brenase youth attacked the Ofoase Zongo young and fired at them, killing one of them.
A resident who narrated the incident to Starr News said “a boy in Brenase whose attempted arrest by Police led to fatal gunshot a year ago at Brenase which our brother Saeed was shot and buried with the IGP coming to town recently, has also attacked a Zongo youth again. The victim came to Brenase but the boy beat and destroyed his motorbike. So the incident got the Ofoase Zongo youth angry. When the guy who committed the act went to “Outlaw spot” at Ofoase in the evening, the Zongo youth besieged the spot to retaliate him and dragged him to police station. The Brenase youth upon hearing the incident mobilized and stormed Ofoase Zongo to fire gunshots and went on rampage pushing down food being sold on the streets”.
The Zongo youngsters succeeded in apprehending two Brenase people, the speaker said.
In order to attack a Zongo woman peddling Waakye, the Brenase youth stormed the area of the fuel filling station yesterday.
The waakye was pushed to the ground by them.
One person was killed and three others sustained gunshot wounds as a result of the Brenase youth ambushing the Zongo youth in the cemetery area and opening fire on them.
Reinforcement team of Police and Military however arrived and have since been patrolling the two communities.
Despite the presence of Police and Military, according to the chairman of the unit committee Yaw Akowia, anxiety is high since it appears like the Zongo youngsters intend to surprise the community by besieging it.
