Pele’s funeral: Photos of football legend laid in state in Brazil
Pele, the late Brazilian football legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, was given a state burial in Brazil on January 1, 2022.
Pele died on Thursday, December 29, 2022, at the age of 82, after a long battle with colon cancer.
His body was laid in state at Santos’ Estádio Urbano Caldeira Stadium for 24 hours as thousands of fans paid their respects.
Gianni Infantino, FIFA president, attended the funeral in Sau Paolo.
Pele, dubbed “The King,” will be laid to rest at the Memorial Necropole Ecumenical, a vertical cemetery in Santos, on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.
He spent the majority of his club career (18 years) at Santos, where he grew up and won every trophy available before moving on to New York Cosmos at the end of his career.
Pele received worldwide recognition for his outstanding achievements with Brazil, leading his country to three World Cup victories and becoming the only player to win three World Cup trophies.
He held the record for most goals scored for Brazil, with 77 in 92 matches, until Neymar equaled it against Croatia in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
